Abstract

Abstract

Objective To examine the gap between the current layout of medicine and health higher vocational programs in Yunnan Province and the development demands of the comprehensive health industry, and to propose recommendations for optimization pathways. Methods Platform-based data were mined to analyze the 35 medicine and health programs offered by 50 higher vocational colleges in Yunnan in 2025, in terms of program distribution, enrollment scale, institutional affiliation and type, and regional distribution; these findings were then compared with the national vocational education program catalog, the latest occupational standards issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the 14th and 15th Five-Year Plans. Results Traditional programs accounted for 96.69% of all program distribution points, while emerging and ethnic-medicine programs made up a mere 3.31%. Infant and child care services and management （27 placements）, nursing （26）, rehabilitation therapy technology （23） and pharmacy （18） ranked among the top four. Ten programs each enrolled more than 5, 000 students, with nursing topping the list at 22, 371 （20.6%）. Emerging programs such as health big data management and services, medicinal diet and dietotherapy, and visual training and rehabilitation each had no more than two program distribution points. The four programs of optometric instrument technology, reproductive health management, medicinal diet and dietotherapy, and Dai medicine, together enrolled only 347 students （0.3%）. Of the 50 colleges, 35 were public （70.0%） and 15 were private （30.0%）, and eight specialized medical junior colleges （16.0%） undertook 58.0% of the student training task. Central Yunnan concentrated 31 colleges （62.0%）, 32 programs and 66, 173 students （61.0%）. Only 15 of the 35 programs （42.9%） had corresponding vocational undergraduate programs. Conclusion The program layout in Yunnan is confronted with problems including over-concentration of traditional programs, an inadequate supply of emerging and ethnic-medicine programs, unbalanced institutional structure, uneven regional distribution, and a low matching rate for the secondary-higher vocational-undergraduate articulation. It is therefore necessary to establish a dynamic program regulation mechanism oriented to industry demands, optimize the allocation of institutional resources, construct "hamburger-style" program clusters, and improve the secondary–higher vocational–undergraduate articulated training system.
